Colecovision AV Mods

  The Process

The Steps

At RarityNine, we do professional mods on Colecovisions we sell..

The Colecovision in 1982 was not built to last 28 years or more, and therefore several points of failure cause these systems to break down for one or more of many reasons.

  1. The power On/Off switch. Originally these switches were packed with a special lubricant which over time dries out and renders the console virtually unusable. Servicing the switch often requires complete disassembly, desoldering, resoldering, repacking with lubricant or sometimes complete replacement

  2. Dirt, dust, debris, liquid spills.

  3. Joystick controller chips fail  - they are very prone to damage from static electricity

  4. Poor reception on modern TV's. The original connection for a Colecovision to 1980's television sets was via a 2-screw antenna connection. Most modern TV's have no such connection and even if it did, this method of transfering the signal to the TV is poor at best.

All of these issues and more are addressed by an updating modification done on our Colecovisions.

The result is a crisp picture, better sound reproduction, ease of connection to modern televisions through 3 cables, gold tipped (supplied by us)

In the past we have sold only via Ebay, and sales were brisk. But we can now offer these systems directly, and pass the Ebay fees savings on to you.

With each order you get:

  • A professionally cleaned, serviced and tested console

  • 2 refurbished responsive joysticks

  • Tested power supply

  • A set of cables for quick connection to modern TV's, DVD players, etc.

We often offer special packages including expansion modules, game cartridges, with savings over individual purchases.

Cleaning

First we disassemble the Colecovision and give it a thorough cleaning in and out.

Each component is tested for serviceability and reliability

The audio and video is modded to bring it up to 21st century standards. This greatly improves picture and sound quality

Often a point of failure on the 1982 Colecovision is the joystick controller chips. Symptoms of failure is a game starting up without choosing a difficulty level and/or the character moving all its own in one direction with no control. We test and replace as necessary.

Another common, perhaps the most common point of failure on older consoles is the power switch. It results in intermittent play, screen "noise" and poor functioning of the entire system. The power switches are cleaned and rebuilt as necessary.
